Ασβέστης
Γυναίκες με κουβάδες στα χέρια
λερώνουν τον τοίχο με ασβέστη
κρύβουν τα γράμματα
κάτω από την άσπρη επιφάνεια
ανασαίνουν τη θάλασσα πριν την καταιγίδα.
Παιδιά βουτάνε τα δάχτυλα στο λευκό,
τραβάνε γραμμές που ξεραίνονται γρήγορα
κανείς πια δεν θυμάται τι έγραφαν
μα στην παλάμη τους κοιτάζουν ακόμα εκείνο το απόγευμα
με μια αλλόκοτη αθωότητα
καθισμένα στο πεζοδρόμιο
σκιές που διαβάζουν
τις πέτρες συλλαβές
και τις ρωγμές τους διαφωνίες.
Κάτι σαλεύει κάτω απ’ το φρεσκοβαμμένο.
Το μόνο σύνθημα…
η επιμονή του ασβέστη
να κρατάει την υγρασία
πρόταση που δεν ειπώθηκε ως το τέλος.
Whitewash
Women with buckets in their hands
stain the wall with whitewash,
hide the letters
beneath the white surface,
breathe in the sea before the storm.
Children dip their fingers into the white,
draw lines that dry too quickly.
No one remembers now what they said,
but in their palms they still look at that afternoon
with a strange innocence,
sitting on the pavement,
shadows reading
the stones as syllables
and their cracks as disagreements.
Something stirs beneath the fresh coat.
The only slogan…
the whitewash insisting
on holding back the damp,
a sentence never spoken to the end.
