STONES

And the stones, although
they do not say it well, it seems to me, listen
–even though they remain
always still–
thousand-year-old
they stand upon their thrones and listen and watch constantly
Millions
of people pass by and live among one another
With their sorrows,
their pains
their deceptions, their angers,
their pettiness, their loves,
their visions, their disappointments
their murders, their joys
And they prefer
not to speak
They take care to
appear serene and lifeless
Because man’s
cruelty is heavier than stones
Because man
damages even the rocks
More quickly than
the wind, the waters, the salt
Man is
malicious
He does not love
the stones
with their heavy
words
Which constantly remind him
how belated his presence is in existence and in the world,
How the Earth
breathes, turns, changes and disappears
Without him, however
hard he may try
However much he tears
the mountains apart, carves rivers and digs tunnels
That is why they
remain silent
Because they know
what came before and see what comes after
They guess what
will come
and they think
of what has been
And they shake their
heads in gloom
And they prefer
to weep
Because they chose
to remain silent
Against their will
(because once
they spoke to other worlds, to other animals, to other plants, to other elements–
once they grew angry
and spat out magma when they were not listened to, or crushed stretches of land and beings, as they do now
indeed, but even more dominantly)
now they are silent
‘for ever since they
rolled down from their peaks
wanting to say
“beware”
and “this is the fate
of things
those who raise
themselves shall be cast down”
no one believed
them
Like the prophets
who foretold the fall
That is why they
remain silent
Because they have
seen too much
that could not fit
into ten earths like this one
for them to
tell their story……
