Πλόες στη Νέα Υόρκη

Από εκεί
μάλλον χάραζε.
Λιγόστευε κι η βροχή εδώ.

Στις δόξες του πολέμου
κόβαμε κρέας,
κι ο νους
στις σκέψεις της ύπαρξης.

Εποχή ψυχαναλύσεων·
Όπως αυτή που τώρα ζούμε.

Τα δέντρα ανάπηρα
στα κορφοβούνια
και το φέρετρο του Ομήρου
ακόμη ανοιχτό
στα άκρα του μίσους.

Ασύλληπτο πολεμικό συμβούλιο
στις γραφειοκρατίες των Θερμοπυλών.

Υμνείται και τώρα
πως τότε
στην αφθονία της Νέας Υόρκης,
που έγινε κρησφύγετο των πεινασμένων,
με τις αλήθειες
του Μεγάλου Εσπερινού
στο Long Island.

Ο κόσμος δημιουργήθηκε
από το άπειρο.
Σε χάρτες με ηφαίστεια
παρουσιάζεται στους συλλέκτες·
ταξίδι
σε προϊστορικά λάθη
και σε τοιχογραφίες
μινωικών επαύλεων.

Άλλωστε,
μετά την απελευθέρωση από τους κατακλυσμούς,
ήρθε η λύτρωση των ωκεανών,
με τους θεούς
να καλλιεργούν και πάλι τη γη.

Voyages to New York

From there
perhaps dawn was breaking.
The rain was also diminishing here.

In the glory days of war
we were cutting meat,
and the mind
on thoughts of existence.

An age of psychoanalysis;
Like the one we are living through now.

The trees crippled
on the mountain peaks
and Homer’s coffin
still open
at the edges of hatred.

An inconceivable war council
in the bureaucracies of Thermopylae.

It is praised even now
as then,
in the abundance of New York,
which became a refuge for the hungry,
with the truths
of the Great Vespers
on Long Island.

The world
was created
from infinity.
On maps with volcanoes
it is presented to collectors;
a journey
into prehistoric mistakes
and into the frescoes
of Minoan villas. After all,
after liberation from the floods,
came the redemption of the oceans,
with the gods
cultivating the earth once again.
