Here
Here begins the song of the world.
Here the earth asks the sky
to accompany the birds
on their final journey.
Here the seasons
do not answer to time,
and the stones are covered
with dew and salt
to draw eternity.
But where do these stone walls go,
the ones that people have built?
Where do they go amid the turmoil of suffering?
And with what horizons
do they converse in order to endure?
Is it true, my friend,
that the wind of the islands heals the storm?
Is it true that the gentleness of evening
soothes the anguish of mastless ships?
And I, naked,
with my words,
in the darkness of my eyes,
do not recognize the dawn,
do not see the night.
I invent a landscape
with the stones
with the dust,
with the winding paths and the winter.
I write the harbor and its boats.
I write this land
that is mine.
In every line,
in the breath
of loves gone by.
Here the little harbor
becomes a country.
Here people
place their stones
upon the spine of the world.
The earth will speak the earth,
the sea will speak the sea.
Is it true that exile ends
in certain harbors of the world?
The anxious eye turns to stone,
and the horizon presses against my throat.
Here
colors are no longer afraid
of the young drowned man.

Εδώ
που δημιούργησαν οι άνθρωποι;
Πού πηγαίνουν μέσα στην ταραχή των δοκιμασιών;
συνομιλούν για να αντέξουν;
πως ο άνεμος των νησιών θεραπεύει την καταιγίδα;
γαληνεύει τα βάσανα των καραβιών χωρίς κατάρτι;
σε ορισμένα λιμάνια του κόσμου;
Εδώ
